Legal & General staff vote to strike over 1,700 potential job cuts at Kingswood, Surrey headquarters

Legal & General staff have voted for strike action over the threat of 1,700 job cuts at the group's headquarters in Kingswood, Surrey.

In total 68 per cent of L&G's Unite members at the hub took part in the vote, with 63 per cent voting in support of taking industrial action. However action may be averted – L&G has said it will provide new information about the possible relocation of staff, Unite said.

The job cuts were expected to come about as a result of a relocation of the headquarters, which L&G revealed last month. The financial giant plans to vacate the Kingswood site by 2017, citing potential cost savings.

Ian Methven, Unite regional officer said: “63 per cent of members in Kingswood have voted for strike action, a vote which underlines the frustration felt by dedicated and experienced staff who feel they are being cast aside.

"Following this result Unite has been promised new information and a serious approach to consultation from Legal & General,  which we will review while continuing to consult with our members."

An L&G spokesman has previously said the consultation process was "constructive, with all parties working together to get the best outcome for both employees and the company".
