Lindsay sets sights on a medal as gamble pays off

SARAH Lindsay admits her big medal gamble has been giving her sleepless nights in the build-up to her third Olympics.

The 29-year old short track speed skater made the decision to focus solely on the 500m in Vancouver as opposed to the longer distances.

But the move looked to have paid off after she progressed to Wednesday’s quarter-finals with a second place in her heat behind Canada’s Marianne St-Gelais.

Lindsay will now hope for a favourable draw as she looks to improve on her tenth place in Salt Lake and eighth place four years ago in Turin, with a podium upgrade.

“My plan was to be aggressive, which I did but the next step was to stay calm, which I didn’t manage,” she admitted. “It was a messy race but I did enough. Because there was a Canadian in my heat it was very loud and I couldn’t hear my coach as he was giving cues.

Of her gamble, she added: “My biggest fear was that I would do four years hard training and then come here and it would all be over after one race. I tried very hard not to focus on that but it was always there at the back of my mind that was my nightmare scenario.”
