London house prices: Renting in the capital? These are the best postcodes to find a flatshare in London, based on supply and cost-per-month

Renting in London? You're not the only one. More and more of the capital's population are living in shared flats and houses – but it's been leading to some pretty extreme situations. 

There's been a mattress in a cupboard in Clapham, on offer for a snip at £500 a month (excluding bills). Then there was the shed in a lounge in Bethnal Green for a cool £530 a month. In fact things have got so out of hand it's actually cheaper to take out a room in some of London's five star hotels.

But perhaps it's just a case that London's would-be renters are looking for their homes in the wrong places. 

Research carried out by SpareRoom.co.uk has identified the parts of the capital that have the most flatshares on offer – and how they compare on price. 

Those in need of a place to rest their head could do worse than go east, where more than two-fifths of London's room rental supply is based. That’s in stark contrast to the south west of the capital, which has just 9.9 per cent of the total available. 

People looking for somewhere soon should stay away from St Paul's, as EC4 has the fewest number of rooms available in the whole of London – just 26 in the whole area. 

We've crunched the numbers to produce this interactive chart, which helps you to find the areas with the most supply based on your budget.

The table below shows the top 20 postcodes by availability. Of course, London house prices being what they are, it's not just about supply – it's location too – which explains why Shoreditch can still command prices averaging £745 a month, despite having the most availability in the capital.

This might help savvy renters find a new home – but there's nothing we can do about your oddball flatmates once you've moved in.
