London transport disruption: Tower Bridge is closing to traffic for three months
Travelling from the City to the south side of the river is about to get a whole lot more fun – Tower Bridge is set to close to all traffic for three months.
No vehicles will be allowed access to the London landmark from Saturday 1 October to Friday 30 December, while Canada Corporation carries out "major essential works".
Transport for London (TfL) has warned that roads in the surrounding area will be busier than usual during the period.
According to TfL, the bridge will be closed from the junction of Tower Bridge Road and Queen Elizabeth Street on the south side, to the A100 Tower Bridge Road and East Smithfield junction on the north side.
A signed diversion route will be in place, via London Bridge northbound and via Southwark Bridge southbound. The congestion charge will not apply for journeys made via the signed direction of travel.
"While we will try to maintain a good service, some buses will be on diversion or will stop short of their destination," TfL said, and urged public transport users to allow more time for their journeys while the maintenance work is going on.
