The first bottles of English sparkling wine joined the major fine wine marketplace Liv-ex this week.

On Monday, a six-bottle case of the Sussex-based Nyetimber's 2010 vintage Classic Cuvee traded for £120 in bond.

This represented a wholesale price of £20 a bottle, without tax.

French wines from Bordeaux dominate the fine wine Liv-ex exchange, but England has now joined the marketplace's "rest of the world" list.

The group includes the US, Australia, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand and several other regions in France, among others.

In 1998, Nyetimber won the International Wine and Spirit Challenge's sparkling wine award for its 1993 Classic Cuvee.

The English wine industry as a whole gained more fizz last year as 37 new wine producers and vineyards opened over 2015, research from national accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young found in May.

Meanwhile, a total of 170 wine producers have entered the domestic industry over the past five years, UHY Hacker Young said, while the popularity of boutique alcohol and locally-made products were key driving factors behind English wine's success.
