Manchester United director donated to Donald Trump campaign while Arsenal’s Stan Kroenke and Liverpool backed Hillary Clinton

Manchester United director Edward Glazer donated to $38,800 to the Republican cause during Donald Trump's successful presidential campaign, although Hillary Clinton was the more popular candidate among the Americans represented in English football's boardrooms.

Edward Glazer, was one of just two American directors in the English game to donate to Trump during the race, the other being Millwall owner John Berylson who also gave $2,700 to president elect's campaign.

Glazer gave $5,400 to the Trump campaign alongside a $33,400 donation to the Republican National Committee, but also donated $5,400 to Clinton. 

Overall the Democrat candidate received much more financial backing from American directors in football including from Edward's brother Avram Glazer, United's executive co-chairman, and Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke.

Kroenke made a $2,700 donation to the Clinton campaign as did Liveroool chairman Tom Werner, — a longtime Democratic Party supporter — and Crystal Palace director and co-owner David Blitzer.

Avram Glazer donated $5,400 to the Clinton campaign but also made further contributions to local Democratic Party committee's across the country totalling $420,000 and gave $267,200 to the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The defeated Clinton may not have been Avram's preferred candidate, however, as his first donation made this election cycle was to Republican candidate Jeb Bush in December.

Crystal Palace's Blitzer also appeared to switch from red to blue donating $2,700 to the Clinton campaign and $2,300 to the DNC after making four donations worth $10,800 to Republican candidate Marco Rubio.

Swansea's American co-owner Stephen Kaplan did not donate to either presidential candidate, but did give $4,600 to Democrat Michael Bennet who won re-election to the senate for Colorado. His partner at the Liberty Stadium Jason Levien donated to Barack Obama in 2008.

Millwall owner Berylson, who supported Trump with a $2,700 donation, also donated $500 to the Republican National Committee.

The Boston-based businessman described himself as "a registered Democrat" after it was revealed he donated to Republican nominee John McCain in 2008.
