Manufacturers want Heathrow expansion plan

HEATHROW’S bid to build a third runway received a boost this morning after a leading business group added support for the plan just days before a consultation on airport expansion options closes.

EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, conducted a survey that reveals 80 per cent of companies surveyed back expansion of Heathrow over rival Gatwick. The support comes from companies across all regions and sectors, and companies of varying sizes. Half of companies with overseas units say aviation is critical to business. Seventy-three per cent of companies cite Heathrow’s good position on the strategic road network as a reason for expansion.

The Davies Commission is looking into various options for airport expansion. Last week Runnymede local council stopped supporting the expansion, which is opposed by many residents. Proponents of expansion say it’s vital in a global marketplace. The Department of Transport says 40 per cent of non-EU trade by value is exported by air.

EEF chief executive Terry Scuoler, said: “Expansion at Heathrow is clearly the best option for business and the country overall.”
