MARTIN Broughton, who oversaw the recent sale of Liverpool Football Club, is putting together a bid to buy the Tote.

Broughton is assembling an offer for the state-controlled betting firm through Sports Investment Partners (SIP), the private equity firm he recently launched with his son, Michael.

The racing fan, who is a former chairman of the British Horseracing Board, is expected to lodge an initial bid for the Tote – forecast to be valued at around £250m – before a deadline of midnight on Friday, according to Sky News.

However he will reportedly find himself racing for the finish line against two of Britain’s richest men, property magnates David and Simon Reuben.
