Mayor Khan makes case for London to host Joshua vs Fury boxing bout
The Mayor of London has said he will work to support any bid to see Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury fight in the capital.
The two heavyweights are on a collision course in the ring in what would be a Battle of Britain bout.
And despite the pair both losing their undefeated records in recent years, the prospect of two of the nation’s biggest boxing names taking each other on is palpable.
This has spurred on many of the world’s great arenas to bid to host the match, with the likes of Los Angeles, the Middle East and Las Vegas understood to be keen on welcoming Fury and Joshua.
But Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has hit back at those bids, insisting that the capital stands ready to do whatever it takes to bring the Battle of Britain fight to the shores of Blighty.
Joshua on home soil?
A spokesperson for the Mayor of London told Morning Wire: “London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor is working to bring more of the world’s biggest events to the city.
“London has staged some of the biggest boxing events in recent history at Wembley Stadium, with record crowds of over 90,000 attending heavyweight contests including Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte.
“Sadiq has made clear that London would be the perfect place to stage the long-awaited bout between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury and the Mayor stands ready to support any move to bring the event to our capital as we build a better London for everyone.”
Anthony Joshua has taken part in three bouts at the national stadium across his career, against Daniel Dubois, Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin. Fury, on the other hand, has boxed only Dillian Whyte at the 90,000-capacity venue in north London.
