Mayweather in Pacquiao’s sights after Cotto stopped
NEWLY crowned five-time world champion Manny Pacquiao is gunning for unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr after his breathtaking win over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto on Saturday night.
The Filipino superstar, 30, stopped Cotto in the 12th round of their WBO welterweight clash in Las Vegas to claim his fifth world title at a fifth different weight.
And although he is already assured a place in the history books, Pacquiao has his sights firmly set on a mega-fight with Mayweather to secure his status as pound-for-pound king.
“The whole world wants to see him fight Mayweather and I want Mayweather,” said Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach.
Pacquiao added: “My job is to fight in the ring and I think that depends on Bob Arum my promoter to negotiate that fight. I’m just going to take a vacation first and spend time with my family and have fun.”
Saturday’s stunning win took Pacquiao’s record to an impressive 50 wins, with 38 knockouts, three defeats and two draws. He proved too fast and aggressive for
Cotto and his relentless pressure finally told when, 55 seconds into the final round, referee Kenny Bayless stopped the contest.
“I tried my best to knock him out. I thought in the 11th round they would stop the fight,” said Pacquiao.
And should a showdown between Pacquiao and Mayweather take place, the American has been warned about the Filipino’s capabilities.
“I didn’t know from where the punches were coming. Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought,” said Cotto.
