Michelin Guide 2017: The 15 new Bib Gourmand restaurants in London

By: Nina Edy

The UK’s Michelin Guide 2017 has been unveiled, and there’s new addition to the accolades handed out to restaurants with exceptional cuisine.

Bib Gourmands are given to less formal restaurants offering exceptional good food at moderate prices. Restaurants which achieve this special honour are not required to offer the same level of service as those receiving actual Michelin stars.

London currently has 52 Bib Gourmand restaurants, we’ve put together a list of the latest additions which are good choices offering high-quality food and good value for money.

Charlotte’s W5, Ealing

The third restaurant opened by the Charlotte's Group, offering tapas style style food with an English twist. As well as being awarded a Bib Gourmand, it has also been named one of the "Top 3 of the Best New Brits" by TimeOut.

Legs, Hackney

Having opened fairly recently in May 2016, this spot is so much more than a wine bar. With its compact menu of small plates, Legs is a fun and casual space, a perfectly relaxed environment.

Upstairs (at Trinity), Clapham

In earlier years, 'upstairs' solely accommodated the posh folk, today, people like you and I get a chance to go too. Aptly named, this restaurant is described as a casual dining space that is well suited for private functions and larger groups.

Foley’s, Marylebone

With prices ranging from £3.50 to £12 you can't go wrong. This unique spot serves a diverse range of dishes inspired by flavours from the Middle East and Asia. Set up over two floors, it opened following a successful six week pop-up (Foley’s Tasting Kitchen) in Shepherds Bush.

Bao, Soho

Bao means bun incase you wondered. This Taiwanese restaurant transitioned from a street stall, and has become very popular, having been rated five stars by TimeOut. The tantalising menu is fresh and innovative, based on Taiwanese street food dishes.

Hoppers, Soho

Featuring dishes inspired by Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, this eatery is small but stylish and effortlessly mixes old and new. The menu gives traditional Sri Lankan street food a modern twist.

Newman Arms, Marylebone

If you're looking for a spot serving an exceptional Sunday roast, then look no further.

Vico, Seven Dials

Offering a full waiter service, this is a vibrant destination for authentic, delicious and inexpensive Italian dining, paired with award-winning Gelupo gelato, you can't go wrong.

Padella, Southwark

A pasta bar located in Borough Market serving hand rolled pasta with sauces and fillings inspired by the chefs' trips to Italy. Prices range from £5 to £9, and no reservations can be made so make sure you go early for some delightful and mouthwatering pasta.

Marksman, Bethnal Green

"With its quirky, brown-tiled façade, this pub has long been a local landmark; the wood-panelled bar retains the feel of a traditional boozer, while the first floor dining room is more modern. Simply cooked, seasonal British dishes are wonderfully fresh, well-balanced and full of flavour" says the Michelin guide

Paradise Garage, Bethnal Green

Situated underneath the railway arches in Bethnal Green,  It's a small plate type of place, offering some amazing combinations using fresh ingredients. In case you're in the market for a place to host your staff Christmas party, they offer a semi-private dining room on the mezzanine level can accommodate up to 25 people.

Gunpowder, Spitalfields

A home-style Indian Kitchen that takes inspiration from family recipes and the vibrant, confident flavours of home cooking, this is also a no-reservations restaurant so get there early to avoid disappointment. The menu consists of about 20 dishes from across India.

Barbary, Bloomsbury

"A sultry, atmospheric restaurant" serving North African cuisine, where all the stools are arranged at a 24-seat horseshoe shaped counter bar. The menu is said to take inspiration from the Barbary Coast, and countries from the Atlantic Coast through to the Mediterranean Sea leading to Israel.

Primeur, Canonbury

This modern European small plates spot is located in a stylish former garage space with communal tables. Servings are small and designed for sharing, despite the simple look of the dishes, the ingredients really come through –  "understated but packed with flavour".

Bellanger, Inslington

Inspired by "the original Alsatian brasseries of Paris", this traditional French restaurant offers everything from breakfast pâtisseries to an extensive a la carte menu – careful, you could be there all day.
