Middlesex opener Sam Robson boosts claims for for Test recall after smashing records at Lord’s
Records tumbled as Middlesex opener Sam Robson boosted his chances of earning an England recall as his side’s County Championship clash with Warwickshire at Lord’s petered out into a draw.
Robson again reached three figures, scoring 106 in Middlesex’s second innings to add to the double century he notched earlier in the match, which gave him a county-record haul of 337 runs across the four days.
The Test opener slot alongside skipper Alastair Cook, who also hit a ton for Essex against Sussex yesterday, has been a long-term issue for England, while it remains a position under scrutiny after Nottinghamshire’s Alex Hales failed to impress against South Africa during the winter.
Robson’s blistering start to the domestic season could see the 26-year-old right-hander, who played the last of his seven Tests against India at the Kia Oval in 2014, recalled for England’s series against Sri Lanka, which starts next month.
“My focus for this season was to get big scores so I’m thrilled to get runs again in the second innings,” said Robson. “It has been a special few days. I know enough about the game to realise I am not going to have many days like that in my career.”
While Graham Gooch has the record of the most runs scored in a match at Lord’s – 456 for England against India in 1990 – Robson amassed the most by any Middlesex batsman, beating the previous highest of 319 set in 1893 by Andrew Stoddart.
