SWANSEA revealed a “back to basics” approach was the key to Garry Monk’s appointment as manager yesterday on a three-year deal.

Monk, 35, succeeded Michael Laudrup as boss on a temporary basis in February and has guided the Swans to Premier League safety with 15 points from 13 games in charge.

Chairman Huw Jenkins said: “As we look forward to our fourth season in the Premier League, we all agreed we needed to get back to basics and reinforce the principles that have brought us success in recent years.

“We have been impressed with how he adapted in very difficult circumstances.”

Monk originally joined Swansea in 2004, helping them rise from League Two to the Premier League.
