Monzo outage stalls payments for thousands of customers

A technical fault forced Monzo to switch to a backup system, leaving many customers unable to access their accounts.

UK fintech Monzo is ramping up its lifestyle reach.

Monzo confirmed a system failure on Thursday that prevented thousands of users from making card payments or receiving transfers. The digital bank said it had identified the issue and activated a stand‑in backup service, but many customers still reported that the app would not let them complete transactions.

What went wrong

When users opened the app they were met with a banner reading: “We’re experiencing issues. We’ll let you know when they’re resolved.” A number of customers took to X to complain that expected salary payments were missing from their balances.

“I’m meant to be receiving my pay early today and I can’t even access the option to do so. Please can you fix this I have things to do,”

Monzo’s technical team switched to a fully independent backup bank, branded “Monzo Stand‑in”, while engineers investigated the fault.

Industry impact

Downdetector logged a sharp rise in outage reports around midday, with more than 3,000 users flagging the problem. This is the second major disruption for the fintech this year, following a January incident that left customers unable to withdraw cash from the app.

Monzo is not alone. Lloyds Banking Group recently suffered a glitch that displayed other customers’ transactions, and a Treasury Committee report last March showed that nine of the UK’s biggest banks and building societies were down for a combined 803 hours over the past two years. Barclays recorded the most incidents at 33, though it has reduced total downtime, while HSBC logged 32 incidents amounting to 176 hours.

Looking ahead

Monzo’s spokesperson said the technical issue has now been resolved and all services are back online. The bank apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience.

Analysts will watch how the incident affects user confidence and whether the bank accelerates upgrades to its infrastructure. The episode also adds pressure on the sector to improve outage reporting and contingency planning, especially as fintechs continue to challenge traditional banks.
