More than half of Londoners would vote for Sadiq Khan in 2020 according to a Yougov survey

More than half of Londoners would vote for Sadiq Khan in the 2020 mayoral election, according to a new survey, despite concerns over crime rates and affordable housing. 

A total of 55 per cent of respondents to a Yougov survey said they would vote for the incumbent Labour mayor in the first round of the election, compared to 28 per cent who would vote for Conservative contender Shaun Bailey.

Bailey became embroiled in scandal early on in his campaign after a pamphlet emerged in which he wrote that multiculturalism “robs Britain of its community”.

Meanwhile seven per cent would vote for Green candidate Sian Berry, four per cent for Liberal Democrat Siobhan Benita and six per cent for “some other candidate”, according to the data collected from 1020 London-based adults.

A total of 36 per cent of Londoners said they would vote for Khan if a mayoral election were to take place tomorrow, with 17 per cent saying they would vote for Bailey. 31 per cent said they did not know who they would vote for.

Remainers were more likely to select Khan, while those who voted leave in the EU referendum said they would choose Bailey in the election.

According to 47 per cent of voters surveyed Khan is doing well in his role as Mayor of London, however 36 per cent believe he is performing badly in the job.
