England skipper Eoin Morgan: Attacking cricket is the only way to conquer one-day world
England skipper Eoin Morgan insists a relentless commitment to attacking cricket is the only way for his side to become a potent limited-overs force ahead of the first one-day international against Australia at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton today.
The five-match series against World Cup winners Australia provides a platform for England to showcase their continued evolution in the 50-over game after their enterprising 3-2 series win over New Zealand in June.
Those tussles saw England score 1,617 runs and strike 209 boundaries, the highest totals by any team in a five-match series, and was in stark contrast to their disastrous group-stage exit at the World Cup earlier this year.
“Previously, we had set targets and restrictions on ourselves but that is not the case now,” said Morgan.
“We will play smart cricket but at the moment we will take the game to the opposition. It’s about us trying to get the most out of ourselves and push the boundaries with everything we do.
“When we came back from the World Cup, the message was clear that what we were doing was not working so we needed to bridge the gap.
“The method we used previously meant we had a very good record at home but I hope the method we are going with at the moment will improve our cricket abroad. There won’t be any dull cricket played, that does not interest me and does not win games.”
