Murray brothers set to join forces in Davis Cup bid
FORMER Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is set to partner his brother Jamie in Davis Cup doubles after the duo were named in Great Britain’s team to face the United States in Glasgow next month.
The selection highlights Great Britain’s determination to win the clash and paves the way for a potential showdown between the Murray’s and world No1 pairing Bob and Mike Bryan in the World Group match.
Doubles specialist Jamie Murray is included in a Davis Cup side for the first time since teaming up with Andy and recording a straight-sets victory against Luxembourg four years ago.
Leon Smith’s four-man team, which also includes James Ward and Dom Inglot, will bid to repeat last year’s victory over their American rivals in San Diego when Great Britain reached the Davis Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1986.
“From a selection point of view we’ve been able to choose our strongest possible team, which is of course spearheaded by Andy Murray,” said Smith.
“The tie will be a huge deal for him personally as he returns to play in Scotland for the first time since winning Wimbledon in 2013.”
World No3 Andy Murray, meanwhile, recorded a straight-sets 6-4, 7-5 victory over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in the opening round of the Dubai Championships yesterday.
The 27-year-old Scot will now face Portuguese Joao Sousa, a player he beat in the Australian Open last month, in round two. British No2 Ward lost 6-4, 6-4 to Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.
