Murray: GB not good enough
BRITISH No1 Andy Murray refused to commit to Davis Cup duty after defeat to Poland saw Great Britain relegated to the competition’s third tier.
Murray won his second singles match to set up a decider, only for 19-year-old debutant Dan Evans to lose in straight sets to Polish No2 Michal Przysiezny.
World No3 Murray’s commitment to his country’s cause has been questioned before, and the Scot hardly banished speculation with his post-match comments in Liverpool.
“I’ve said all along, if I’m fit I’ll play in the matches if the captain or the coach really, really wants me to play,” he said. “If they do that’s fine, I’ll think about it and there’s a good chance I’ll play.”
Captain John Lloyd added: “Andy’s got aims of being No1 in the world next year and winning grand slams so I would think there’s a good chance he might not be available, but that’s for him to say.”
Great Britain have only dropped into Group Two, where they will face the likes of Monaco and Ireland, once before. But Murray, who earlier beat Jerzy Janowicz, said justice had been done. “Now at last we’re where we deserve to be. We clearly aren’t good enough to be playing these teams.”
