Murray hits back in Montreal to confirm status as world No2
BRITAIN’S No1 Andy Murray completed a superb fight back to claim the Montreal Masters and justify his newly-earned status as the world’s second best player.
Then 22-year-old came from a set down to defeat Juan Martin del Potro 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 for his fifth title of the year and 13th in his already glittering career.
By reaching the final, Murray leapfrogged Rafael Nadal as the world No2 and now heads to Cincinnati next week confident of defending his title and making his mark ahead of the US Open, which begins on 31 August.
Del Potro, playing in his first Masters final, held his nerve to take a tense opening set on the tie-break, but soon began to wilt in the sweltering conditions.
Murray held onto the coat-tails of the Argentine through an equally tough second set but his superior fitness soon began to tell and after earning the crucial mini-break at 5-3, the Scot handsomely served out for the set.
This effectively ended the dejected Del Potro’s challenge as Murray swept into a 4-0 lead and never looked back, eventually sealing victory in two hours and 42 minutes to become the first Brit in 128 years to lift the Canadian title.
