Murray masters mirth to march past erratic Kyrgios at US Open
BRITAIN’S Andy Murray admitted he had to stop himself from laughing as he reeled off a fourth consecutive win over wild child Nick Kyrgios to reach the second round of the US Open.
Murray stayed cool in the face of a Kyrgios performance that veered from scintillating to scratchy to defeat the Australian 20-year-old 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 on Tuesday night in New York.
“In almost all the matches I’ve played [against Kyrgios], there’ve been a couple of points where I’ve laughed on the court or smiled because some of the stuff is funny,” he said.
“When he let go of the racquet today after the forehand – that only happens to him. It went into the crowd and that’s funny when you’re playing against him. But you need to try to concentrate on your side as much as you can.”
Third seed Murray faces Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the second round today, while fellow Briton Jo Konta meets Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza in the women’s draw. World No1
Serena Wiliams, meanwhile, continued her quest to secure a calendar grand slam by beating Holland’s Kiki Bertens a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
