Murray quick to return Hewitt’s Davis Cup jibe

BRITAIN’S Andy Murray has returned fire after Australia veteran Lleyton Hewitt attempted to start the mind games ahead of this week’s Davis Cup showdown.

Hewitt heaped pressure on Murray by pinning the hosts’ hopes of progressing from their first semi-final for 34 years solely on the Scot, who played in all three winning rubbers against France in July.

But Murray shot back at Hewitt, who is making his Davis Cup swansong this year, insisting that the 34-year-old and his more callow colleagues will equally feel the heat in a partisan Glasgow setting.

“It’s Lleyton’s last chance to win the Davis Cup and he’ll be feeling pressure as well. They have some young players that won’t have played in an atmosphere like this before either,” he said of the three-day tie, which starts on Friday.

“The pressure is on us as well because everyone views this as a good opportunity, so we can point fingers at one another and say there is pressure for certain individuals and none on the others but they’ll be feeling the pressure as well and we’ll see who handles it better.”
