Murray sets up Simon clash after surging into Rotterdam last eight
BRITAIN’S Andy Murray set up a quarter-final clash against Gilles Simon after brushing aside Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in straight sets at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam yesterday.
Top seed Murray was hampered by an ankle knock at the start of the second set but powered through after fighting back from a break of serve down to win 7-5 and build on his 6-3 triumph in the first.
Murray only hit 14 winners compared to his opponent’s 25 but made 17 unforced errors compared to Pospisil’s 26, and will now face France’s Simon in the last eight.
“My level was good,” said Murray. “I moved well and I felt like when I really needed to, I was able to improve my level and step my game up a bit. I found a little bit of extra intensity in the important moments and that was key.
“Obviously, the second set was a lot of momentum swings. I went up a break, was feeling good, but then I lost my serve to love in the next game. In the game after that, I got broken to 15. When he was serving for it he was in a great position.”
