Nathaniel Clyne deal takes Liverpool’s summer spend over £50m on the transfer window’s first day
Liverpool have spent over £50m already this summer, despite the transfer window being officially open for less than 24 hours.
The £12.5m signing of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton was confirmed this lunchtime, taking Liverpool's total spend for the summer to £52.9m. There are eight weeks still remaining for the Reds to make additions to their squad, but already this is the fifth biggest summer transfer window in the club's history.

Clyne is Rodgers' 28th signing at Anfield and the £12.5m fee takes his total spend to £287.7m. Only Rafael Benitez, who spent six seasons on Merseyside, has spent more yet Rodgers is quickly closing in on his total spend of £309.5m.
On average, Liverpool's Northern Irish manager has forked out £10.3m per player.
