New Year’s Eve in London: The best places to watch tonight’s fireworks for free

If you weren't quick enough to snap up a ticket to watch tonight's fireworks on the riverbanks of central London, we've compiled some top viewing spots to save your New Year's Eve celebrations.

Cannon Street

Slightly further along the Thames in the middle of the City, the riverbank by Cannon Street is just outside the ticketed area but still free from obstacles that could block your view of the fireworks.

It's expected to be extremely busy, so make sure you arrive early with some friends to hold down the fort.

The nearest tube stations are Cannon Street itself, Mansion House and Bank.

The bridges

For a spectacular side-on view, there are a few bridges that will prove great spots to watch the display. 

While Blackfriars Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and the Hungerford pedestrian bridge will all be closed off within the ticketed area, you can still catch a great sight from several others.

Lambeth Bridge, Southwark Bridge, London Bridge, Millennium Bridge and Tower Bridge will all be good points to take stock of the fireworks, if you can beat the crowds to get a place.

Greenwich Park

For some open space close to the centre of the city, you can visit the parks by the Royal Observatory for a good vantage point.

On the plus side, there are some great pubs nearby for revelry before the fireworks. Just make sure you get to the park in time to lay down a picnic blanket with a great view.

The nearest tube station is North Greenwich, as well as connections to the DLR.

Alexandra Palace

If north London is an easier destination for you, the grounds outside Alexandra Palace have sweeping views across the entire city. You'll be able to see the main firework display in full effect, as well as catch some of the smaller displays going on across London.

The nearest tube station is Wood Green, while Alexandra Palace also has its own train station with lines to Finsbury Park and Kings Cross.

Primrose Hill

At one of the highest points in London, Primrose Hill promises to be a hot spot for Londoners watching the fireworks tonight.

The nearest tube stations are Chalk Farm and Swiss Cottage.

Hampstead Heath

Finally, the last north London high point for watching the display will be Hampstead Heath. A vast expanse of parkland, the Heath will offer some great views of tonight's festivities, while also housing public toilets and amenities within the park.

The nearest tube station is Hampstead, with overground services ending at Hampstead Heath station.
