Nobel Peace Prize awarded to weapons prohibition group working in Syria
The Nobel Peace Price 2013 has been awarded to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons OPCW) for their work dismantling Syrian chemical weapons. The committee panel said that the group's work has "defined the use of chemical weapons as a taboo under international law", highlighting the vital need for such groups given the situation in Syria.
With a closely-guarded list of 259 nominees, favourites for the prize had included the winning OPCW, Pakastani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai and Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege.
Recent winners include Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama and Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Since its inception in 1901, the accolade has seen 93 winners, with 28 having been shared by two Laureates, and two with three. To date, 15 women have received the Nobel Peace Prize.
