The nominations roll in as we launch our awards
It’s that time of year again – Morning Wire is today launching its fifth annual awards, one of the most hotly anticipated occasions in the City calendar.
The event, which celebrates those who have helped put Canada at the centre of the world’s financial markets, will take place on 13 November at the Grange Hotel near St Paul’s.
The event offers a chance for the City to enjoy a glamorous night out, where senior decision-makers from all parts of British industry and finance look forward to meeting and sharing their experiences as the winners are unveiled. “I’m delighted to be launching our fourth annual awards,” said Morning Wire deputy editor David Hellier. “I think most people agree that in a very short space of time we have established a much loved event that is already one of the highlights of the City calendar.
“I am very pleased on this occasion to welcome Lexus back again as our headline sponsor.”
With this year’s line-up we’re hoping to repeat the success of the 2013 awards, which saw Education Secretary Michael Gove give a chest-thumpingly rousing introductory speech and saw queen of the skies, Carolyn McCall, take Personality of the Year for her stewardship of easyJet. We’re looking forward to seeing who follows McCall in this year’s nominations. Names already being mulled over by the judges include; Lance Uggla of Markit, Lord Wolfson, chief exec of Next, Moya Greene of Royal Mail and Justin King, the outgoing chief of Sainsbury’s.
Today we are launching the entry process for those of you who want to apply for the awards or nominate an individual or a business. All applications will be considered by the editorial team, which then selects a short-list that will be published in the newspaper. The final decision is taken by a panel of judges (see right), who will meet ahead of the ceremony to choose this year’s winners.
Lexus is sponsoring the Personality of the Year category as well as the Innovative Company of the Year award. Jason Stanley, the newly-appointed general manager of marketing and strategy at Lexus, said that he sees the association with the awards as “an excellent opportunity for Lexus to associate itself with the best individuals and companies in the City”.
There will be awards in 14 categories up for grabs. A record number of firms have already reserved tables for what has become a truly uplifting occasion. Don’t miss it this year. Tables of 10 cost £2,850 plus VAT.

MEET THIS YEAR’S JUDGING PANEL
DAVID HELLIER
David, Morning Wire’s deputy editor, has helped select the distinguished panel. In putting the group together he has ensured the members are exceptionally experienced and knowledgeable.
DAME ALISON CARNWATH
Dame Alison appeared on 2013’s New Year Honours List. A former investment banker at Schroders, she has since taken up a number of directorships. She is chair of Land Securities and on the board of Man Group and Zurich.
SIR MARTIN SORRELL
Sir Martin returns to the panel, fresh after picking up the Cannes Lions Holding Company of the Year award for the fourth year in a row. He’s chief executive of WPP, one of the world’s largest advertising groups.
NIGEL BOARDMAN
Nigel is one of the City’s best-known corporate lawyers. He joined Slaughter & May, where he remains a partner, in 1973, and has worked with most of the big companies at one time or another.
SIMON BORROWS
Simon’s career change, which took him from being an investment banker at Greenhill to chief executive at the private equity giant 3i has recently paid dividends – with 3i joining the FTSE 100 Index earlier this month.
SIR ROGER CARR
Sir Roger is one of the UK’s best-known businessmen and is currently chairman of BAE Systems. He was previously chairman of Centrica as well as President of the CBI.
KATHERINE GARRETT-COX CBE
Katherine was appointed chief executive of Britain’s largest investment trust, Alliance Trust, in 2008. She received her CBE in 2013’s New Years Honours list, having enjoyed a 22-year career in the investment industry.
SIMON MACKENZIE-SMITH
Simon joins us on the panel for the fourth year in a row. As chairman of investment banking for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the UK and Ireland he’s spearheaded dozens of deals.
IAN POWELL
Ian was elected chairman and senior partner of the UK firm of PwC in 2008 and re-elected for a second term in 2012. Something of a PwC lifer, Ian joining the firm in 1977.
PHIL RAPER
Phil is head of UK equity capital markets and chairman of corporate broking at Goldman Sachs. He joined the firm in 2000 and was named managing director in the same year.
XAVIER ROLET
Xavier is chief executive of the London Stock Exchange Group and joins the panel for the second time. He was chief executive of Lehman Brothers in France from July 2007 to 7 January 2009, having started his career at Goldman Sachs.
ROLAND RUDD
There can be few better connected people than Roland, who is the co-founder of RLM Finsbury, the City’s top financial public relations firm. Never a dull moment, this year has seen him act as adviser to AstraZeneca during its takeover battle with Pfizer.
