199 problems and a glitch is one: NYSE is having technical problems

The New York Stock Exchange suffered a technical glitch in early trading on Wednesday resulting in trades for nearly 200 ticker symbols being cancelled.

The unspecified glitch first occurred at 9.27am in New York. Things were back up and running by 10.09am, however the latest update at 10.26am indicated the problem had returned.

Nearly an hour later at 11.32pm it indicated a more serious problem with a red alert rather than the previous amber ones. It said in a market status update:

"NYSE is experiencing a technical issue in one trading unit, which is affecting a subset of symbols listed on our Market Status. Trading is suspended in these symbols and all open orders in these symbols were cancelled.

Fellow stock exchanges Nasdaq and BATS issued what's known as a self-help alert indicating that the affected exchange should be bypassed.

The 199 affected tickers included Blackrock's municipal bond trust (BBN) and Total (TOT).
