Online supermarket Ocado will bring 300 jobs to London as it bolsters the digital talent behind its technology platform for supermarkets.

The Ocado smart platform will be sold to companies across the world to help them move online, the firm said.

The London office, in Old Street, becomes Ocado’s sixth development centre, the company said. The others are in Hatfield, Bulgaria, Spain and two in Poland.

It will start as home to 40 software engineers, with plans to bring the total to around 300 “in the near future”.

Ocado confirmed 260 of those roles will be new technology jobs.

“We’re excited to be expanding our network of development hubs into London, a city renowned for being at the forefront of tech innovation and home to many talented technologists,” said Ocado Technology chief executive James Matthews.

The firm sells an online platform, similar to that which has propelled it to the top in the UK, to other supermarkets. They then use this to sell groceries to their customers. It also comes with warehouse technology, and other innovations needed to fulfil orders.

Matthews said: “As we are growing rapidly, we are always on the lookout for people who share our drive to innovate. This London hub joins our network of development centres to offer exciting employment opportunities for ambitious, tech-savvy individuals.”
