One of the escaped Pentonville prisoners has been found – the other remains at large
One of the men who escaped from Pentonville prison last week has been found and arrested, the Metropolitan Police revealed last night.
Matthew Baker was arrested at an address in Ilford last night, and taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody. Two other people – a woman aged 21 and a man aged 33 – were also arrested. They were taken to an east London police station where they also remain in custody.
Baker and his cellmate James Anthony Whitlock escaped from the Islington prison last week. They were reported to have fooled guards with mannequins in their bunks, but this was later changed to reports the pair tricked prison staff with pillows under blankets.
Baker was on remand having been convicted of attempted murder, and Whitlock was on remand after being charged with conspiracy to burgle. Police warned the public not to approach either of the escapees, as they could become violent.
Officers from Islington Borough are continuing to investigate, supported by expertise and resources from the Met's Flying Squad and Homicide and Major Crime Command.
They are renewing appeals for information to trace Whitlock who remains outstanding.
He is described as a white man of slim build. He has the word 'Tracy' tattooed on his torso. It is not known what clothing he had on when he escaped from the prison.
