Oscar secures Chelsea cup joy as Newcastle knock out Palace
CHELSEA face a trip to League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup after Brazil midfielder Oscar sealed the Stamford Bridge club’s progress with a second-half winner against Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers last night.
Oscar’s low drive into the corner of Andy Lonergan’s net proved the difference between the sides after a header from visiting defender Matt Mills cancelled out Chelsea’s opener from French centre-half Kurt Zouma.
Bolton keeper Lonergan was in impressive form, denying German World Cup winner Andre Schurrle in particular on numerous occasions before Oscar settled matters.
Crystal Palace were dumped out the competition by Newcastle United at Selhurst Park with the home side failing to build on the momentum of debutant Sullay Kaikai’s last-gasp leveller as the north east oufit ultimately ran out 3-2 winners.
Defender Paul Dummett proved the Newcastle match-winner with a header in the second period of extra-time which set up a fourth round tie with Manchester City.
Striker Dwight Gayle had given Palace the lead with a 25th minute penalty before French striker Emmanuel Riviere notched his first goals for Alan Pardew’s side with a timely double, while the visitors saw Mehdi Abeid sent off.
Holders Manchester City produced a ruthless second-half display to begin their Capital One Cup defence with a powerful 7-0 victory over 10-man Sheffield Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.
Fresh from his goalscoring salvo against former club Chelsea on Sunday, loan star Frank Lampard started and finished the rout as Bosnia forward Edin Dzeko also scored twice to take his personal tally to 10 goals in 11 League Cup games.
Spain winger Jesus Navas was also on target as Yaya Toure converted a penalty and Jose Angel Pozo grabbed a debut goal, with former Hull defender Kamil Zayatte the man to see red for the Owls.
West Brom prevailed from the all-Premier League clash with Hull City after late goals from Gareth McAuley and Saido Berahino completely turned the tie on its head.
Club record signing Brown Ideye had opened the scoring for the hosts before Tom Ince levelled matters before the break and Robbie Brady fired Hull into the lead after half-time, while in the other fixture Brighton beat Burton Albion 3-0.
