Paul Scholes: I would not enjoy playing for Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised the one-dimensional nature of current boss Louis van Gaal’s tactics and said it is not a side he would have relished featuring in.
United were unable to breakdown Championship side Middlesbrough in 120 minutes on Wednesday night before suffering penalty shootout agony in the Capital One Cup.
“There’s a lack of creativity and risk,” said Scholes.
“It’s a team now you wouldn’t want to play against because they are tightly organised. But it seems he [Van Gaal] doesn’t want players to beat men and it’s probably not a team I’d have enjoyed playing in.”
Scholes defended goal-shy skipper Wayne Rooney, despite the England captain netting only two goals in nine league appearances so far this season, again laying the blame at Van Gaal’s door.
“I played with some brilliant centre forwards and I don’t think they could play in this team – the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham. You don’t get crosses into the box or midfielders looking for runs.”
