The Premier League is closing in on the sale of its US television rights for a record $2bn (£1.5bn).

ViacomCBS and Disney’s ESPN are among those bidding for the rights with Comcast’s NBC, the current holders who acquired them for roughly $1bn (£745m) in 2015, as first reported in the Financial Times.

The Premier League are expected to sell all matches in a single block rather than separate packages, and the deal is expected to span from 2022 until end of season 2028.

If the deal is successful, this would be the soccer league’s most lucrative overseas deal, according to the FT report.

The move marks English football’s attempt to break America and the competitive market where US cable networks are fighting to have the most unique content to keep up with streaming giants.

Second-round bids are due next week.
