Prime Minister Theresa May still has faith in Attorney General Jeremy Wright

Prime Minister Theresa May still has faith in the Attorney General despite losing the Article 50 case today, a spokeswoman for Number 10 has confirmed.

Asked if May retained confidence in Jeremy Wright, they confirmed the Prime Minister's support.

Wright was among government's legal team, defending an argument brought by a number of parties that it could not trigger Article 50 as a matter of prerogative power.

However, government today lost its argument, with judges at the High Court deciding parliament must be consulted before beginning the UK's withdrawal process from the EU.

A leapfrog process, whereby the case will skip the Court of Appeal and head straight to the Supreme Court, has already been put in place. Government has vowed to appeal, and the case is likely to reach the highest court in the country by next month. 

"The government is disappointed by the court’s judgment," a government spokesperson has said. "The country voted to leave the European Union in a referendum approved by Act of Parliament. And the government is determined to respect the result of the referendum."
