Question marks remain over tour, admits Strauss
ANDREW STRAUSS admits it will take some time yet for him to prove whether his decision to sit out the recent Bangladesh tour was vindicated.
The England captain returns to duty this morning when he leads out his side for the first Test against Bangladesh at Lord’s, taking over the reins from Alastair Cook, and then Twenty20 skipper Paul Collingwood.
Strauss mutually agreed with selectors that he and fast bowler James Anderson would sit out the February and March tour following a tough Test and one-day international campaign in South Africa.
And after watching England win that series, and then go on to lift the World Twenty20 in the West Indies, Strauss admits it’s too early to say whether it was the right decision.
“The tour [of Bangladesh] was a chance for a couple of us to be left out of the side, hoping we had enough strength to win the series – and that was proved correct,” he said.
“The question mark is can Jimmy and I hit the ground running and push on through the summer and beyond. That will be the question mark, but I’m in a really good place to do that. Jimmy is as well – fresh and raring to go. We hope we will see some benefits.”
