Rooney’s back for Battle of Britain, says Ferguson
SIR ALEX FERGUSON has confirmed Wayne Rooney will return to the Manchester United squad for tomorrow’s Battle of Britain with Rangers.
The England striker was left out of Saturday’s 3-3 draw with former club Everton to avoid the “terrible abuse” he is subjected to at Goodison Park.
Ferguson was worried the abuse would be even worse due to the recent revelations about his private life.
But the United chief insists the front man will return for the opening Champions League group match with the Scottish champions at Old Trafford. “We made the decision simply because he gets terrible abuse,” explained the United manager.
“We were not going to subject him to that abuse. We’ve got a fantastic squad and we’ll use it. He’ll play on Tuesday, yes.”
David Beckham, meanwhile, has backed Ferguson’s decision to drop Rooney. “Sir Alex Ferguson knows more than me and definitely knows more than anyone about his players. He has obviously made a decision what is best for him and for his team.
“He’s being looked after by the right club and the right manager and with the right people around him.”
