Rugby and cricket in mourning as tragedy strikes at club level
AUSTRALIAN rugby union is in shock after a 25-year-old club player died from head injuries suffered when making a tackle.
Nick Tooth, who was playing at fly-half for New South Wales outfit Quirindi Lions against Narrabri Blue Boars on Saturday, struck his head on an opponent’s shoulder.
He was treated on the pitch and then airlifted to hospital, where he died despite surgery.
The incident comes as cricket mourns the passing of Indian 20-year-old Ankit Keshri, who died after colliding with a team-mate as they vied for the same catch in a club match in Kolkata on Friday.
Former Bengal under-19 captain Keshri, who is said to have regained consciousness but later suffered a cardiac arrest in hospital, had been tipped for a promising professional career by great Sachin Tendulkar.
