Ryanair’s been hacked for millions via Chinese bank
Ryanair has been targeted by hackers who have stolen nearly $5m (£3.25m) from the airline's bank account.
The cash was taken from the budget airline by electronic transfer via a Chinese bank, the Irish Times reports.
Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau is investigating the crime, which took place last week, and is working with authorities in Asia.
In a statement to the Irish newspaper, Ryanair said:“Ryanair confirms that it has investigated a fraudulent electronic transfer via a Chinese bank last week. The airline has been working with its banks and the relevant authorities and understands that the funds – less than $5m – have now been frozen.The airline expects these funds to be repaid shortly, and has taken steps to ensure that this type of transfer cannot recur.
The airline said it won't make any further comment on the matter as it is subject to legal proceedings.
Companies are increasingly at risk of sophisticated attacks by cyber criminals after cash, sensitive documents and customer details.
Sony suffered the most high profile attack which resulted in thousands of leaked documents about the workings of the company making their way onto the internet and its co-chief Amy Pascal standing down.
Costa Coffee suffered a data breach in which members of its loyalty scheme were targeted causing millions of online accounts to be suspended last week. British Airways' Avios air miles scheme has also been the target of hackers in recent weeks.
