The Ryder Cup is in full swing, but which US state is the most prolific provider of golfers?

It may not surprise you to learn that it's a straight shootout between California and Texas, two of the most populous areas of the US.

California has provided 11 players since 1979 (when the Europe v US competition started) and is home to Phil Mickelson and its absent star, Tiger Woods.

The captain, Tom Watson, is from Missouri, and played in the Ryder Cup five times, between 1977 and 1989.

Ohio, birthplace of perhaps the greatest of them all, Jack Nicklaus, has five players to its name (or 5.8 per cent).

But in the lead with 12 players and 14 per cent is Texas.

California and Texas have the most players in the 2014 squad with three, followed by Florida, with two.

Use our interactive map to see which states have hadf the most players, and to see which players have come from which state.

Overall, 30 states have had players make it into the team.
