Sam Jones’ England debut hopes in doubt as Wales skipper Sam Warburton requires surgery

A potential England debut for Wasps forward Sam Jones during next month’s autumn internationals has been placed in doubt after the back row sustained an ankle injury in training yesterday.

The 24-year-old was in contention to replace club-mate James Haskell, who himself is sidelined with a toe injury, but has been forced to return to his club from England’s training camp.

“Jones will undergo further examinations to diagnose the full extent of the injury,” read a Rugby Football Union statement.

Wales skipper Sam Warburton, meanwhile, requires surgery on a fractured cheekbone and faces a race against time to be fit for his side’s opening clash of the autumn against Australia on 5 November

Warburton sustained the injury during Cardiff Blues’ 16-13 Pro12 defeat against Leinster on Saturday and is set to have a small plate inserted in his cheekbone. He is set for between two and four weeks on the sidelines.

Defending Premiership champions Saracens have signed Welsh back Andrew Fenby on a three-month contract to cover injuries and suspension. Fenby, 30, had announced his retirement after leaving London Irish in the summer.
