Sam Torrance: USA’s record Ryder Cup win was the best I’ve seen
This turned out to be a tough Ryder Cup for Europe, who were outplayed, out-thought and out-fought by the USA.
The Americans were simply magnificent, sublime from Friday morning all the way through to Sunday evening. It was the best Ryder Cup performance I’ve seen in my career.
Dustin Johnson led the way for the USA, taking maximum points from his five matches, but there were great performances throughout the team.
The way Bryson DeChambeau opened his singles victory over Sergio Garcia, driving the green to set up an eagle at the par 4 first hole, was like nothing I have ever seen before.
For Europe, Jon Rahm was exemplary until coming up against Scottie Scheffler and his brilliant opening run of four birdies on Sunday.
And Ian Poulter also deserves great credit for beating Tony Finau to maintain his incredible unbeaten record in Ryder Cup singles matches. The Postman delivered again, but it was too late for Europe.
I don’t think there was one specific factor that decided this contest; the USA just played better. The course at Whistling Straits was set up beautifully for them, with wide fairways, and they did a fantastic job. You have to take your hat off to them.
They have some truly brilliant players, and most of them are still in their twenties. Europe will be back but this group of Americans looks like being a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
