Selling Cahill would be suicidal, insists Megson
BOLTON boss Gary Megson has categorically ruled out selling star defender Gary Cahill this season.
The 23-year-old has impressed for the Trotters ever since his move from Aston Villa in January 2008. And his eye-catching performances have not gone unnoticed with rumours rife that Tottenham and Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus are contemplating a bid.
But Megson, who managed to tie down Cahill to a new deal in the summer, is adamant the player is going nowhere.
“Football-wise it would be suicide to sell him in January,” he said. “This club got itself into a nightmare scenario over Gary. There was a set fee that he could have gone for. We did brilliantly in the summer to get rid of that and we’re in a position now where we don’t have to sell him.”
And Megson, having been in a similar situation before when Nicolas Anelka left the Reebok Stadium for Chelsea in the 2008 winter window, does not want a repeat performance.
He added: “Selling real assets in January is a nightmare. We’ve been there before with Anelka, we didn’t win in 10 games and escaped relegation only by the skin of our teeth in the last five games.”
Cahill has twice been called into Fabio Capello’s England squad though he still awaits his first cap.
