100 people evacuated at The Shard after fire breaks out on 33rd floor
The Shard has been evacuated after a fire broke out in one of the London landmark's restaurants on the 33rd floor this morning.
Around 100 customers were evacuated from restaurants on levels 31, 32 and 33 by staff, and there have been no injuries.
The Brigade was called by 1112. Seven fire engines and 35 fire officers attended the scene, but the fire was put out by the restaurant's sprinkler system.
The rest of the building, on St Thomas Street in Southwark, was unaffected. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Station manager Matt Burrows who was at the scene, said: “The building's sprinkler system did its job and suppressed the fire in its early stages, which prevented any serious damage.
“This incident highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies to install them. As well as being potentially life saving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible.”
