Some 4.4 million Londoners have received at least one Covid jab

Just more than 4.4 million people in London have received at least one dose of a vaccine against Covid-19, while 2.6 million Londoners have received both doses.

The latest figures from London show than more than seven million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the capital since the start of the vaccine rollout.

Health and social care secretary Matt Hancock said: “London has reached a significant milestone today and delivered over seven million jabs to people up and down the capital – in mass vaccination sites, GP surgeries, community pharmacies and our hospitals.

“At every step of the way over the past six months, our amazing NHS staff have worked day and night, hand in hand with volunteers and our armed forces.

“Everyone in London has pulled together through this pandemic – we haven’t beaten this virus yet so when you get the call, get the jab.”

According to the latest government data, 39.5 million people across the UK have now have a first vaccine shot, with just more than 26 million people having received both, giving them the maximum possible protection against the virus.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi added: “Getting a jab is the best way to protect yourself, as well as the people around you and will charter our course out of this pandemic and back to normality.”

Recent research by Public Health England found two doses of Covid-19 vaccines are highly effective against the variant first found in India.

There have been concerns that the so-called India variant could throw the government’s restriction roadmap off course, with Covid cases recorded in the UK once again on the rise.

However today Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country is still on track to ease restrictions on June 21, but he added it was too early to make the call as it was not clear if the country’s vaccination rollout was through enough to protect people from a new Covid surge.
