GERMANY MOURN KEEPER ENKE
THE widow of Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke, who committed suicide by running in front a train on Tuesday, has revealed he had been battling depression since 2003. Wife Teresa told how Enke failed to overcome the death of his daughter Lara, who died of a rare heart condition in 2006 at the age of two. Thousands laid wreaths for the 32-year-old outside his club, Hannover 96, yesterday, while Germany called off their friendly with Chile in Cologne on Saturday as a mark of respect.
Federer crashes out in Paris
TENNIS: Home favourite Julien Benneteau played the match of his life to come from a set down and send world No1 Roger Federer crashing out of the Paris Masters last night.
Federer looked comfortable after coming through the first set 6-3, but back came the Frenchman to take the second on a tie-break before wrapping up the decider 6-4.
World No2 Rafael Nadal also struggled, saving five match points to squeeze past Nicolas Almagro 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Carberry nets 30-day booze ban
RACING: Grand National-winning jockey Paul Carberry was handed a 30-day ban from racing in Ireland yesterday after failing an alcohol breath test for a second time.
Carberry, who won the 1999 Grand National on Bobbyjo, was also given a €5,000 (£4,500) fine by the Irish Turf Club.
Trainer Noel Meade said: “It seems pretty harsh.”
