Rudisha breaks 800m record
ATHLETICS: Kenya’s David Rudisha yesterday broke the men’s 800m world record at an IAAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin.
The 21-year-old, who was only a semi-finalist at last year’s World Championships, clocked one minute 41.09 seconds, beating the record set in 1997 by Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer by 0.02 seconds.
Wigan top Super League
RUGBY LEAGUE: Wigan Warriors sealed their first Super League Leaders’ Shield for a decade with a comfortable 38-18 victory over Hull KR at Craven Park.
Pat Richards’ 22 points inspired Wigan to their 21st win of the season as they ended the Robins’ four-month unbeaten run at their home ground.
Fifa 2018 bid inspectors to kick off tour
PREMIER LEAGUE
DELEGATES from world governing body Fifa arrive in London today to begin an inspection of England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, in the absence of PM David Cameron, will receive the six-man party at 10 Downing Street this morning.
The technical inspection team will then head to Wembley in the afternoon, where they will meet England head coach Fabio Capello and be given a tour of the national stadium.
Football Association chiefs are expected to use the four-day visit to emphasise that England represents a safe bet, compared to rival bidders Russia, Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Holland. During their stay Fifa officials will also visit Manchester and the north east.
