US Open final postponed
TENNIS: The US Open men’s singles final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic was declared a wash-out last night and postponed until today after heavy rain at Flushing Meadows.
It is the third year in a row that the US Open final has been played on a Monday night with the match expected to get underway at around 9pm BST.
World No1 Nadal is looking to become only the seventh player ever to win all four Grand Slam events.
Richards rues his luck
RUGBY LEAGUE: Wigan’s Pat Richards missed a last-gasp penalty as Leeds Rhinos held on to clinch a thrilling 27-26 victory in the Super League play-off to move to within 80 minutes of another Grand Final.
Richards touched down for his 30th try of the season to bring the scores level at 26-26, but then missed his chance of glory after Kevin Sinfield kicked over a drop goal to book Leeds a semi-final place in a fortnight’s time.
Woods misses out on play-offs
GOLF: Tiger Woods has failed to qualify for a tournament for the first time in his professional career last night after missing out on the play-off finale at the Tour Championship at East Lake.
The world No1 could only tie for 16th at the BMW Championship – not enough to break into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings.
England’s Paul Casey, however, moved up to 16 places to fifth in the standings after finishing a runner-up at Cog Hill, behind Dustin Johnson, who moves up to second overall behind leader Matt Kuchar.
Kaymer makes it high fives
GOLF: Martin Kaymer continued the fine run of form of Europe’s Ryder Cup team after cruising to victory in the KLM Open in the Netherlands.
The German shot a final round 66 to finish on 14-under-par and ensure that players on the 12-man team for Celtic Manor have now won the last five European Tour events.
