Tigers coach loses a finger
RUGBY LEAGUE: Castleford Tigers head coach Terry Matterson is recovering after losing a finger in a freak training ground accident.
The 42-year-old Australian got his wedding ring caught on a fence as he went to retrieve a ball in training in Perpignan.
He was rushed to hospital and was held overnight after doctors failed to sew it back on. But still he returned for his side’s 14-12 victory over Catalans Dragons.
Morris in for retired Bonorino
RUGBY UNION: Northampton have moved quickly to replace prop Santiago Bonorino by signing ex-Wales international Darren Morris.
Argentinian Bonorino, 34, has been forced to retire after suffering a back injury. So, coach Jim Mallinder has swooped to sign experienced ex-Leicester star Morris on a deal from Cardiff Blues until the end of the season.
Swann at top price for IPL
CRICKET: Graeme Swann is one of three players priced at the highest mark of $250,000 (£153,000) for today’s 2010 Indian Premier League auction.
Swann is joined by Australia’s Brad Haddin and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi at the top of the list for the March tournament.
England’s one-day star Eoin Morgan is one of seven players to attract a base price of $200,000, along with 41-year-old Surrey legend Mark Ramprakash.
FINA announce doping retests
SWIMMING: Governing body FINA have announced plans to retest doping samples from the Rome world championships for evidence of blood doping.
FINA said that none of the 391 tests taken back in July and August came back positive. But now it wants to examine samples to check for evidence of “plasticizers” – tiny particles of plastic left over from blood bags.
