Spurs beat Hammers to net Gudjohnsen
TOTTENHAM boss Harry Redknapp has stolen a march on former club West Ham to clinch the loan signing of Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The former Chelsea striker looked all set to join the Hammers on a short-term loan and even underwent a medical at Upton Park.
But Redknapp hijacked the deal with an 11th hour offer before eventually landing the Iceland international’s signature yesterday.
Gudjohnsen, 31, spent eight years in England with Bolton and Chelsea between 1998 and 2006, before joining Spanish giants Barcelona.
Indeed, he proved a hit at Camp Nou until losing his place in their star-studded forward line last season, prompting a move to French club Monaco.
But he has been unable to produce his best form for the Ligue 1 side and is joining Spurs in a bid to resurrect his career.
Redknapp explained: “I just thought he’s a good player and he can play several positions for us, he can play in a midfield or attacking-midfield role if we want to change our system.
“We’ve lost Aaron Lennon [to injury] so we haven’t got a great deal of width. We can play a diamond formation if we want to and he can be a big player in that system.
“So, yes, we took him on loan until the end of the season to see how it goes.”
