Spurs boss Harry in shock swoop to lure retired Figo
TOTTENHAM boss Harry Redknapp has made an audacious swoop to lure veteran midfielder Luis Figo out of retirement to serve his twilight years at White Hart Lane.
The 36-year-old decided to hang up his boots at the end of last season after helping Inter Milan to the Serie A title.
But Spurs boss Redknapp has since held talks with the ex-Barcelona and Real Madrid ace near his home in the Algarve and admits there is a chance he could lure the 2001 World Player of the Year to the Premier League.
The pair met at the Sir Bobby Robson Celebrities Golf Classic, and Redknapp later admitted to Portuguese newspaper A Bola that Figo may not be ready to hang up his boots just yet. “I talked to him, he is a great friend of Sir Bobby Robson,” he said. “We talked about his future and football and he told me nothing is definitive yet.”
Spurs are also locked in a tug-of-war with Aston Villa and Everton to sign Groningen striker Marcus Berg, who impressed for the Sweden Under-21’s in the recent European Championship, where the 23-year-old finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals.
Defender Gareth Bale, meanwhile, is a reported target for Birmingham City, who are set to offer Spurs the £5m they paid Southampton for the Welshman in 2007.
