SUMMER SALES Round-up of the day’s activity
AS largely expected, Portsmouth boss Paul Hart was the busiest Premier League manager of the day, securing three new faces for the major loss of midfielder Niko Kranjcar to Tottenham.
Hart began to day by securing the capture of midfielder Hassan Yebda on a season-long loan deal from Benfica before completing a double swoop by agreeing terms with Manchester City’s former Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim.
Hart’s plans were scuppered when a loan deal for Aston Villa full-back Nicky Shorey collapsed but within hours he had secured a defensive partner for Ben Haim in the shape of highly-rated Watford centre-half Mike Williamson in a deal which could rise to £3m with add-ons.
Hart, inset, ended the day by letting striker David Nugent join Burnley on a six-month loan but the Pompey boss would have been delighted to keep hold of England goalkeeper David James with the club admitting later that no bids were lodged for the 39-year-old.
Steve Bruce was another busy manager, but this time the Sunderland boss was recouping money from his £12m capture of Michael Turner on Monday.
Bruce sold Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards to Championship side Ipswich for a combined fee of £4m, and then offloaded centre-back Danny Collins to Stoke City for £2.75m.
Then, right on deadline, the Black Cats announced that midfielder Teemu Tainio, formerly of Spurs, had joined Birmingham City on a season-long loan.
With Collins on board, Stoke allowed Ibrahima Sonko to loan Hull City on a season-long loan.
Fulham boss Roy Hodgson moved to sign Swedish striker David Elm, 26, on a one-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Kalmar FF, although the Cottagers failed in an attempt to land Middlesbrough’s former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere.
Bolton boss Gary Megson also went some way to strengthening his goal-shy attack by securing Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic on loan until the end of the season from French side Nantes.
Championship leaders Newcastle re-signed Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands, while, in the capital, League One pacesetters Charlton landed Coventry’s Leon McKenzie and highly-rated winger Luke Holden from Rhyl.
The big deal north of the border saw Rangers sign PSV winger Jerome Rothern on a one-year loan from PSV.
